Twitter enables permanently banned accounts

Elon Musk has started reinstating permanently suspended Twitter accounts. In doing so, he has kept his promise to loosen control over the platform. Donald Trump could be next.

Musk announced the restoration of the accounts of controversial Canadian podcaster Jordan Peterson. And the right-wing parody website Babylon Bee. He added that comedian Kathy Griffin’s account will be returning. She was banned from the platform earlier this month for impersonating Elon Musk.

Elon Musk, who describes himself as a “free speech absolutist,” has made it his mission to restore accounts that have been banned for violating Twitter’s content moderation guidelines. Donald Trump’s account could be next to be restored.

The billionaire’s decision to reinstate Trump, who was banned last year for organizing a mob attack on the US Capitol to overturn the 2020 election result, has been closely followed by observers but has also been viewed with some criticism.

On Twitter, Elon Musk has launched a poll asking his followers to give their opinion on whether or not former US President Donald Trump’s account should be unblocked. According to the preliminary data, almost 55% of them chose “Yes”. Although the survey is not yet complete, everything points to a positive result. Musk then tweeted the Latin phrase “Vox Populi, Vox Dei.” That means something like “The voice of the people is the voice of God”.

Musk has no plans to restore all accounts. Therefore, not every account is eligible for the same recovery. When a Twitter user urged Musk to “bring Alex Jones back,” Musk replied firmly, “No. In case you’ve forgotten, Jones is a far-right Sandy Hook-denying conspiracy theorist who was permanently banned from Twitter in 2018 for “abusive conduct.”
